In addition to boasting an excellent modern rail network, the country has several stretches of working narrow-gauge rail lines, particularly in Saxony, the Harz mountain area and the coast of Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania. Steam engines are still in service on these routes.
Other popular rail journeys for visitors include the Sauschwaenzlebahn ('Pig's Tail') line in the Black Forest.
There are also a number of interesting rail museums, including those in Nördlingen, Darmstadt and Neuenmarkt in Upper Franconia.
